In any normal digestive process food is chewed in the mouth it is then by passed to the oesophagus where a minor portion of carbohydrate is absorbed. From here the food is directed to the stomach and is broken into smaller particles. These smaller particles are then directed to small intestine. Duodenum is capable of absorbing some percent of iron, vitamins & calcium present in the food. A major amount of nutrients present in the food is absorbed in ileum and jejunum.

In general circumstances the answer is no. However, it may be required if the patient is in the last stage of obesity. It minimizes the risk to a little extent.

Tests to be done Before Bariatric surgery:-

  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Blood test
  • chest X-ray
  • pelvic ultrasound
  • Pulmonary function tests any many others

Evaluation & clearance by the following is necessarily required by the surgeon-

  • Psychiatrist
  • Psychologist or therapist
  • Cardiologist
  • A registered dietician

Steps to be taken by the patient Before Bariatric surgery:-

  • Should choose a surgeon who is well experienced
  • Also compare the fees charged by the some top surgeons of the region, however it not of much importance. It can be done for self satisfaction
  • One should be prepared to accept the risks involved, including death of the patient
  • If the patient is in the habit of smoking he must start avoiding it at least one month before the operation.
  • Should be ready to compromise his/her eating habit for their entire life.
  • Should be committed to follow regular exercise all along their life.

  • Continuous review for any changes taking place in the health of the patient
  • Before Bariatric surgery the surgeons also keep a note of the patient’s insurance coverer to be done after medication.

After completing the above formalities an appointment will be scheduled for the patient with the surgeon to choose the day and time of the operation.
