The Bariatric surgery Risks can be broadly divided into 2 types:
- General risks-which is common in all abdominal operations
- Risks associated with restrictive surgery
General risks includes the following:
- Bleeding or infection from the site of incision
- Strictures or hernia
- Clotting of blood which may progress to the heart & lungs proving fatal for the life of the patient.
- Blockage of intestine as a result of adhesion
- Risks allied with use of anesthesia
Risks associated with restrictive surgery can be broadly classified into 2 phases on the basis of their arrival
- Early risks, which may cause either of the given problem-infection caused as a result of leakage from staples or sutures, this can be corrected by draining the liquid responsible for infection. It is example of serious as well as rare risk of Bariatric surgery.
- It may require removal of spleen in case it is damaged & the blood flow cannot be controlled. It is the most uncommon Bariatric surgery Risks.
- Late risks –they may lead to problems such as -
- Formation of ulcer in stomach commonly found in patients who are in the habit of smoking or who are suffering from disease such as-arthritis
- May face malnutrition ultimately leading to diseases such as –pellagra, beriberi or kwashiorkor which can damage the nervous system.
- Patients may develop loose stool or an abdominal if they had heavy food
- Many a times dumping can also take place which can be corrected by drinking juice or other sweet fluid.
- Two types of hernia are prominent –internal or incisional hernia. If detected must be carefully approved of to save ourselves from any other Bariatric surgery Risks.
- The patient may suffer from fracture of bones, as a result of low calcium being digested by the body.
- Hair loss may evolve as a temporary problem.
The risk of Bariatric surgery can be hazardous if there is any leakage or if there is a blood clot. The percentage of such risks ranges between 1-2% and can be corrected by re-operation.
In worst case, Bariatric Surgery Risks is such that it may cost the life of the patient.
But, its percentage is very low i.e. less than 1%.
