Bariatric Surgery may be the most deserved step for people who remain severely obese after trying non-surgical approaches, especially if they have an obesity related problem. Basically, Bariatric Surgery can be classified into two types:-restrictive and bypass surgery which may be further divided into the following-

Restrictive surgery primarily has one type-

  • Adjustable gastric band (AGB) or sometimes called as “LAP–BAND”-works by decreasing food intake capacity.

Bypass surgery can be divided into-

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)-works by restricting food intake and increasing the absorption of food.
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch (BPD-DS) –works by removing some portion of stomach & re-routing of various digestive enzymes into the intestine.
  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG)-restricts food intake and involves removal of a small section of stomach.

Depending upon the patient’s BMI, eating behaviors, obesity-related health conditions, or other previous operations any one of the above mentioned surgical operation may be chosen. Bariatric Surgery, on an average costs from $20,000 to $25,000.

Conditions to be fulfilled before undergoing a Bariatric Surgery:

  • Weight of the individual should be more than 100 pounds for men & 80 pounds for women or having a body mass index (BMI) above 40.

  • Should be committed to long time treatment.
  • Should be ready to compromise with their eating behavior and many other changes in their day to day life.

Bariatric Surgery Disadvantages:-

  • Surgery to attain weight loss is a serious undertaking.
  • After undergoing Bariatric Surgery a patient may face complications such as malnutrition, pellagra, beriberi and kwashiorkor.
  • Other complications include strictures and hernia.
  • Bariatric Surgery may even lead to death of the people in case the patient is severely obesed.
